OJAI, Calif. – California shut out Washington for the second time this month, with Thursday's 5-0 Cal victory sending the second-seeded Golden Bears to Friday's Pac-12 Championship semifinals. Cal sophomore Maria Smith and senior Maegan Manasse won their singles matches simultaneously to end the match and lead to the 5-0 final score in the quarterfinal win at the Weil Tennis Academy.

Smith defeated Katarina Kopcalic, 6-1, 7-5, on court six, and the 38th-ranked Manasse upset the 29th-ranked Stacey Fung, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, on court one.

Cal improved its record to 16-4, while Huskies' record now stands at 17-9.

The 11th/16th-ranked Bears advance to face sixth-seeded and No. 23/27 USC at 2 p.m. on Friday.

In the regular season on April 14 in Berkeley, Cal routed the Huskies 7-0. Manasse beat Fung, 6-1, 6-3, to clinch that match.

On Thursday, the 36th-ranked pair of Manasse and Maya Jansen got the Bears off to a good start by beating Miki Kobayashi/Alexis Prokopuik, 6-4, on court one. But Cal freshman Alexis Nelson and senior Denise Starr lost to Nour Abbes and Lana Slavica, 6-2, on court three, to leave it up to court two to decide the point. Junior Karla Popovic and sophomore Olivia Hauger obliged, edging the Huskies' Fung and Kenadi Hance, 7-6(5), to give the Bears a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

In singles, the 13th-ranked Popovic posted a quick, 6-1, 6-2 win over Kobayashi, on court two, and then the 124th-ranked Starr knocked off Abbes, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, to hand Cal a 3-0 lead, before Manasse and Smith wrapped up the match.

"We probably didn't come out as quickly in the doubles as we wanted to," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We ended up playing a pretty long doubles point but pulled it out. In singles we stepped up our level and worked our way though some matches. Conditions were a little bit breezy today, but it was just something we adjusted to. All in all we're happy to get the first match under our belts, and we'll use it to get ready for tomorrow. It'll be a quick turnaround."

Cal beat Friday semifinal opponent USC twice during the regular season. The teams played in back-to-back matches, with the Bears winning 6-1 on Feb. 25 in Berkeley and then winning 4-3 on March 10 in Los Angeles.
