Cal Finishes Eighth At Pac-12 Championships

Collin Morikawa Leads The Way With Tied For Sixth-Place Finish

BOULDER, Colo. – Cal (367-364-365 – 1096, +46) completed its 2016-17 season as a team by finishing eighth at the Pac-12 Championships that concluded Sunday at the Boulder Country Club. Collin Morikawa (74-68-72 – 214, +4) led the way for the Golden Bears with a tied for sixth-place finish and is expected to advance to NCAA Regionals play as an individual.

The NCAA golf committee will select a total of 81 teams (including 31 automatic qualifiers) and 45 individual not on those teams to participate at one of six NCAA Regionals across the country live on Golf Channel on Thursday (9 am PT). The Golden Bears will not be in consideration to be selected as a team because they have not been victorious against the required half of their opponents. Cal will have its school-record string of nine consecutive appearances at an NCAA Regional snapped.

"Unfortunately our season as a team will come to an end because we will fall below the .500 rule but there is a lot to be proud of," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "Even though we won't advance to Regionals, we have much to hold our heads high about. We all gave it our best from August to April, and we just fell short. It's nothing to be ashamed of or disappointed."

"Collin will move on to NCAA Regionals as an individual, and he has earned that," Chun added. "He's a fighter and will give his best effort moving forward."

Morikawa started his third and final round at the Pac-12's on Sunday in fifth place five shots off the pace of eventual winner Wyndham Clark of Oregon (69-68-69 – 206, -4). Morikawa birdied his second hole of the day on the par-three sixth but was unable to pick up any more ground. He finished two-over for the day and four-over for the tournament after subsequent bogeys on the par-three 11th, par-four 14th and par-four first.

"Finishing tied for sixth at Pac-12's concludes a great regular season for me," said Morikawa, who notched his eighth top-10 finish in 10 starts this season and improved nine spots from his performance as a true freshman at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships. "This conference is the best in the nation and to be a part of it means a lot. Unfortunately, we have to call it a season for the team but hopefully I'll be able to head to Regionals and represent Cal as best as I can. This week wasn't the easiest by any means, but learning from this and everything throughout the season will definitely get me prepared for Regionals."

The team's lone senior in the Pac-12 Championships lineup Walker Huddy (72-74-71 – 217, +7) finished his five-year collegiate career with a 17th-place showing while his one-over par round and four birdies Sunday were both team bests. Huddy chipped in for his first of four birdies on the day on the par-four ninth and also had birdies on both of the course's par-five holes (12, 2) and the par-four fifth.

"It feels really good to end my college career on a good note," Huddy said. "As for the chip in, I knew I was in a terrible spot and was just hoping to make par. To see it drop was a huge bonus."

Tanner Hughes (75-75-73 – 223, +13) and Sean Yu (73-75-75 – 223, +13) finished in a tie for 40th while Finigan Tilly (73-73-78 – 224, +14) was another stroke back in a tie for 47th after having started the third and final round tied for 16th. William Aldred (78-74-74 – 226, +16) tied for 57th.

Defending national champion Oregon (354-361-350 – 1065, +15) held off Stanford (363-363-342 – 1068, +18) by three strokes for the team title after starting Sunday's third and final round with a nine-stroke lead on tied for third place finisher Washington (355-369-358 – 1082) and an 11-stroke lead over the second-place Cardinal.

The Pac-12 Championships were scheduled as a 72-hole event but were shortened to 54 holes primarily due to snow that made conditions unplayable Saturday.
