No. 9 Cal Rolls Over Hornets, 7-0

BERKELEY – California played at home on Wednesday, meaning that the No. 9/18 Golden Bears probably won and that either Maya Jansen or Olivia Hauger likely clinched the match. The Bears did win, convincingly, over Sacramento State, 7-0, to remain unbeaten at home at 7-0, and Jansen clinched.

The Bears improved their record to 12-3, while the Hornets fell to 9-14, after the nonconference match.

Playing in the cozy confines of the Hellman Tennis Complex for the first time in two and a half weeks, the Bears – who go back on the road for their next match on Saturday – did not lose a set in the relatively quick (less than three hours) contest. Also, no Bear lost more than four games in a match in doubles or singles.

Jansen, who didn't play on the recent road trip to the Pacific Northwest, won in doubles and in singles on Wednesday. Her court-four, 6-2, 6-1 win over Sofia Wicker gave the Bears an insurmountable 4-0 lead and the overall victory.

"It felt good to get out there," Jansen. "It was good to get some of the rust off, and I think all of us competed really well. We were all glad to get out there and get another match under our belt."

Only Jansen and Hauger have decided Cal's wins at home, with Jansen clinching four and Hauger clinching three. They've also combined to clinch 10 of the Bears' 12 wins.

The Bears captured the doubles point over Sacramento State when the pair of senior Stephane Lin and sophomore Maria Smith defeated Carolina Chernyetsky and Sofia Wicker to clinch on court three.

In singles, Lin swiftly gave Cal a 2-0 lead when she beat Louisa Brunetti, 6-0, 6-0, on court six. Starr soon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Karina Vyrlan on court two, and then Jansen settled matters on court four. The teams completed the final three matches to give Cal a 7-0 victory.

"It was good to be back at Hellman," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "It's kind of a short week this week. We're in the middle of conference play, but we wanted to get another match in. And it was a good match for us today. Everyone was really focused today, which was what we wanted. It went well for us. This will be great preparation for our next match at Oregon. And we're really glad we got this match in before the next rainstorm."

The Bears return to the Pac-12 Conference schedule when they play the Ducks in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday at noon.
