Goransson Closes Cal Career In NCAA Singles
ATHENS, Ga. – California's three seniors made news Thursday in the NCAA individual championships, with
Florian Lakat advancing in singles and teaming with
Filip Bergevi to move on in the doubles tournament at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Andre Goransson also made news, as he ended his Golden Bear career with a loss in the singles round of 32.
Ranked 61st, Goransson played North Carolina's 16th-ranked William Blumberg on Thursday, one week after Blumberg beat Goransson in the Tar Heels' round of 16 team victory over Cal. This time, Goransson lost 7-5, 6-2, to end up with a 98-48 all-time singles record at Cal.
The Hollviken, Sweden, native collected his share of wins and honors in his four years as a collegian, including earning All-Pac-12 First-Team honors twice, claiming the Sportsmanship Award at the 2015 USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and winning the singles title at the 2016 ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
"It's been an incredible ride with these three seniors, and it was tough to see Andre play his last match for Cal today," Cal head coach
Peter Wright said. "Andre has always been a tough, classy competitor, and he's done an amazing job of representing our school throughout his career. After earning his degree, he's turning professional, and I think he has a bright future."
Lakat – seeded 9-16 and ranked 12th – won his singles round of 32 match, beating Texas A&M's 48th-ranked Jordi Arconada, 6-4, 6-3. He'll see a familiar face in the round of 16 in Stanford's eighth-seeded and 11th-ranked Tom Fawcett. Lakat beat Fawcett 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 to clinch the Big Slam in the regular-season finale on April 22 in Berkeley, after Fawcett defeated Lakat, 7-6(5), 6-4, on March 7 on the Farm. They will renew the rivalry on Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
Also on Thursday, Lakat paired with Bergevi to play in the NCAA Doubles Championship opening round of 32. Ranked fifth and seeded 5-8, the Bears bested Duke's 20th-ranked Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak, 6-2, 6-4. The Bears will take on TCU's 25th-ranked Jerry Lopez and Reese Stalder at 2 p.m. ET on Friday in the round of 16. They played once during the regular season, with the Bears falling, 6-4, to the Horned Frogs duo on March 10 in Berkeley.
