Bears End Tennis Season, Careers In Athens
ATHENS, Ga. – The California men's tennis season came to an end on Friday, as senior
Florian Lakat fell in NCAA singles and then Lakat and senior
Filip Bergevi lost in NCAA doubles at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The 12th-ranked Lakat, who had already earned singles All-America status as a 9-16 seed, lost in the singles round of 16 to Stanford's eighth-seeded and 11th-ranked Tom Fawcett, 7-5, 7-5.
Later in the doubles round of 16, the fifth-ranked and 5-8-seeded Bergevi and Lakat lost to TCU's 25th-ranked Jerry Lopez and Reese Stalder, 6-3, 6-4.
Lakat ends his career as a three-time All-American and Bergevi ends his collegiate days as a two-time All-American, as for the second straight year the Bears claimed doubles All-America honors based on their seeding. It was a strong finish to this final season for the duo, which also captured the doubles title at the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships in the fall. Lakat also garnered the ITA Northwest Regional Senior Player of the Year award.
Last year, Lakat was an All-Pac-12 First-Team selection and Bergevi made the all-conference second team, after the Bears reached the NCAA doubles quarterfinals. This season's All-Pac-12 honors are slated to come out after the NCAA championships.
