JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Team USA reclaimed the Arnold Palmer Cup on Sunday by wrapping up a 19.5-11.5 victory over Team Europe at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Cal junior Collin Moriakwa was selected by both teams to receive the Team USA Arnold Palmer Cup exemption into the PGA TOUR's Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard in 2018. Morikawa was selected for best representing the "Arnold Palmer legacy", that Is, the values that Arnold Palmer exhibited through his life in golf.

"It was an incredible and memorable experience that I'll never forget," Morikawa said. "Representing the USA is always an honor and to come out with the win on home soil is always a good feeling. It's also an honor that my team voted me to represent Mr. Palmer and be a participant in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. I look forward to the opportunity and couldn't be more excited about it."

"Collin represented himself, his family, Cal, Team USA and Mr. Palmer so well," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "He was competitive, yet he also showed the spirit of the event by being supportive of his teammates, his coaches and his opponents. I'm really excited and thrilled that he was honored with the API exemption. Being voted on and recognized by his USA teammates shows how well-respected Collin is and how great a teammate he is."

Morikawa won two of his four matches at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup including a split of his singles matches after a 2 and 1 defeat at the hands of Team Europe's Fredrik Nilehn in the final day of action Sunday. Morikawa birdied the par-five first hole to take an early lead. A Nilehn birdie on the par-three fourth squared the match but Morikawa regained the lead with another birdie on the par-four sixth. Morikawa would maintain his one-shot advantage until his back-to-back bogeys on the par-five 12th and par-four 13th holes gave Nilehn his first lead of the match. Morikawa fell two holes back after his third bogey of the round on the par-five 15th before running out of holes after both players made par on the par-four 16th and par-three 17th.

Morikawa's two wins in the event came with a 3 and 2 singles victory over Rory Franssen on Saturday and when he teamed with former Stanford golfer Maverick McNealy for a 2 and 1 win over Richard Mansell and David Wicks in foursomes play Friday. His other defeat came when he and former USC golfer Sean Crocker were knocked off in four-ball play Friday by Nilehn and Hannes Ronneblad.

Other members of the winning Team USA squad included Sam Burns, John Coultas, Crocker, Doug Ghim, Nick Hardy, McNealy, Chandler Phillips, Jimmy Stranger and Norman Xiong.

Morikawa was the sixth Cal player to participate in the Arnold Palmer Cup following previous representatives Peter Tomasulo (2003), Michael Kim (2013), Joël Stalter (2013), Michael Weaver (2013) and Brandon Hagy (2014). Two other Cal affiliates have coached in the event with Chun an assistant in 2009 and former Cal head coach Steve Desimone a head coach in 2014. All but Stalter have represented Team USA.
