PHILADELPHIA – After recording three wins and the tournament's highest point and try differentials to complete pool play Saturday at the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s, California will play Kutztown at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET Sunday in the national quarterfinals at Talen Energy Stadium.
Television coverage of Sunday's championship rounds runs from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. PT on NBCSN before culminating from 12-2 p.m. PT on NBC.
The Golden Bears beat Clemson, 33-12, to start their tournament on Saturday, followed by wins over Penn State, 28-19, and Delaware, 54-0, to finish pool play atop the draw after the field was re-seeded for Sunday's cup quarterfinal action. The Bears' +84 point differential and +12 differential in tries scored on Saturday was best across the six tournament pools.
The Bears last faced Kutztown, which finished Saturday's pool play in eighth place, in the final of the 2015 CRC championship.
The other quarterfinalists re-seeded for Sunday's championship bracket at the CRC are Saint Mary's, which finished pool competition in second place and will play Life University, the No. 7 finisher; third-place pool finisher Lindenwood, which takes on Arkansas State, the sixth-best pool finisher; and Indiana, the fourth-best finisher, which plays No. 5 finisher UCLA.
Ten different student-athletes scored across three matches on Saturday for the Blue and Gold, who were led by captain
Russell Webb's 43 points on 14-of-16 conversions (.875) and three tries.
Jake Goena also scored three tries while
Patrick Barrientes,
Sam Cusano and
Aidan Flynn notched two tries apiece.
If Cal can defeat Kutztown in Sunday's quarterfinal, it will take on the winner of Indiana-UCLA in the semifinals. Should the Bears advance to reach the national championship final, which is slated for kickoff at 1:26 p.m. PT/4:26 p.m. ET, they will have the opportunity to compete for their fifth straight national title in Olympic 7s.
