INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Swimming to the third-fastest time in the world this year, Ryan Murphy added a second event to his World Championships program as he took second in the 100-meter backstroke on the penultimate day of the Phillips 66 National Championships at the IU Natatorium.

A strong Cal presence left its mark in the 100 back as Jacob Pebley and incoming freshman Daniel Carr joined Murphy in the championship final. Murphy and Pebley hit the 50-meter mark in second and third place, respectively, and Murphy held that spot to the finish with a final time of 53.02 that trailed only Matt Grevers' 52.71. Pebley finished fourth in 53.81 while Carr took eighth in 54.86.

With Friday's finish, Murphy is now set to represent Team USA in both the 100 and 200 back at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Pebley is also headed for Worlds after his second-place finish in the 200.

Josh Prenot returned to the pool with a good morning swim in the 100 breaststroke, claiming a spot in the championship final as the No. 6 seed. He would touch the wall seventh in the night session as the 2016 Olympic silver medalist in the 200 breast stopped the clock with a time of 1:00.79.

Incoming freshman Bryce Mefford continued a strong week in Indianapolis by making the C final in the 100 back and he wrapped up competition in the backstroke by winning the heat in a time of 55.41. The swim represented a drop of over a second and a half from his prelim effort.

Five days of racing concludes Saturday with the 200 IM, 800 freestyle and 50 freestyle. Once the meet concludes, attention will turn to the announcement of rosters for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary as well as the World University Games in Chinese Taipei.
