Four Golden Bears Earn Conference Honors
SAN FRANCISCO – Four members of the Cal women's rowing team were recognized for their exemplary performance this season, when the Pac-12 office announced conference honors on Wednesday. Freshman
Juliane Faralisch was named the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Newcomer of the Year while seniors
Inger Kavlie,
Rowan McKellar, and
Kendall Ritter earned All-Conference honors. The Pac-12 Awards are nominated and voted upon by the conference head coaches.
Faralisch, a freshman from Heidelberg, Germany, was named Newcomer of the Year after making an immediate impact in Cal's First Varsity 8+. The third consecutive Golden Bear to win the award, Faralisch spent the majority of year as the Bears' three-seat, helping the First Varsity 8+ go undefeated in the regular season and claim third at the NCAA Championships. An intended business major, Faralisch spent the last three summers competing for the German National team and earned a silver medal in the Women's Quadruple Sculls at the 2016 U23 World Championships.
Kavlie, a geology major from Oslo, Norway, earned All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season. A four-year member of the Bears' varsity eight, Kavlie served as the five-seat this season while classmate McKellar earned her first all-conference honors in recognition for her efforts stroking the First Varsity 8+.
Ritter, a senior from Seattle, also earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. A social welfare major, Ritter spent time with both the First and Second Varsity 8s this season, helping the Second Varsity 8+ to a silver medal at the NCAA Championships.
The Golden Bears capped the 2017 season with an impressive performance at the national championships on Mercer Lake in New Jersey. All three boats medaled as Cal finished second overall in the team standings, the 10th consecutive year the Golden Bears have placed in the top three at the NCAA Rowing Championships and the fifth year in a row finishing either first or second.
