PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Two days into the 2017 World Rowing U23 Championship and record times have already been set, courtesy of several Golden Bears. The United States eight – featuring Cal's Dana Moffat and Ellen Heile – won its heat on Thursday morning in a time of 6:00.35, setting the Under 23 World Best Time. The U.S. eight is coached by Megan Cooke Carcagno, a member of the Cal Class of 2002 and a two-time All-American for the Golden Bears.

However the United States' record lasted for mere minutes as the Canadian eight – including Golden Bears Sydney Payne and Julia Vander Hoeven – won the second heat and set a new Under 23 World Best of 6:00.13, topping the United States' mark by 0.22 seconds. Both the U.S. and Canadian boats advanced directly to Sunday's final.

Rising sophomore Juliane Faralisch won her heat in the single sculls to advance to the semifinals. The 2017 Pac-12 Women's Rowing Newcomer of the Year won silver last year in the quad sculls while competing for Germany.

Also representing Germany at the U23 World Championships, Dorothee Beckendorff and Charlotte Wesselmann competed together in the pair and earned a spot in the B Final after their performance in Thursday's repechage.
