BERKELEY - Fans caught a glimpse of the Cal men's tennis team's future on Wednesday evening at the Hellman Tennis Complex, where a few members of last year's top-ranked recruiting class helped the Golden Bears edge the USTA High Performance Junior Team, 5-4, in a scrimmage. Cal freshman Jack Molloy clinched the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory at court-two singles. Bears freshman Paul Barretto along with seniors Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura and sophomore Bjorn Hoffmann also posted singles wins.

"Today's match was a great opportunity to see our team play against some of the best juniors in the country," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "We looked a bit rusty in the doubles, but we came back and played well in the singles. Our team is young and enthusiastic, and I like the way our guys rallied around each other for support throughout the match. Team chemistry is a big part of what makes us special, and I think that was on display today."

The juniors took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Molloy and Barretto – the younger brother of Cal sophomore Nic Barretto – had the Bears' lone doubles win, a 6-2 victory over Jaycer Lyeons and Benjamin Gollin on court two.
 
Paul Barretto quickly evened the match in singles, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Lee on court four. Molloy clinched when he beat the juniors' Jaycer Lyeons, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to make the score 5-2.

The Bears will see the USTA juniors again in the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic, which takes place Friday through Sunday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
