BERKELEY – California men's tennis alumnus Ben McLachlan continues to make news away from Berkeley, as the 25-year-old professional player earned a spot on Japan's Davis Cup team. McLachlan – ranked 136th in the world in doubles – was named to the Japanese squad ahead of its upcoming Davis Cup World Group playoff matches against Brazil.

Japan will play the South Americans from Sept. 15-17 at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan, with a place in the 2018 World Group at stake.

McLachlan previously played under the New Zealand flag, as he and brother and fellow former Bear Riki were born in Queenstown, New Zealand. Their father, Craig McLachlan, is a native of Auckland. Ben McLachlan will now play for Japan, where his mother, Osaka product Yuriko McLachlan, was born.

Ben was back in the Golden State for his most recent tournament, as he and Aussie Steven De Waard reached the doubles quarterfinals of the Nordic Naturals Challenger in Aptos.

Ben McLachlan played for Cal from 2011-14 and led the Bears to the NCAA team round of 16 in his final season. He also earned All-America honors after advancing to the NCAA singles quarterfinals as a senior.
