LOS ANGELES — California scored 30 tries and yielded only one Saturday at the Dennis Storer Classic, defeating UC Santa Cruz, 51-0; UC Davis, 54-0; and UC Diego, 90-7, at the all-UC event named in honor of the former Bruins coach and first head coach of the U.S. National Team.
 
Cal saw 45 different starters take the pitch for its three matches as all 48 able-bodied Golden Bears who made the trip to Los Angeles got playing time. A selection of those student-athletes will be tapped to finish the weekend Sunday against UCLA at 1:30 p.m. on North Athletic Field.
 
Seven members of the Blue and Gold started the scoring Saturday morning against UCSC, including football-crossover Justin Dunn, who contributed three tries. Seven more got into the scoring line against the Aggies, with a pair of tries from prop Damon Wiley. Against the Tritons, freshman Marcus Shankland's five tries outpaced the 20 points delivered on conversions by fellow freshman Desi Streater (10-of-14 vs. UCSD).
 
The lone try scored against the Blue and Gold on Saturday came in the 30th minute of the last match of the afternoon, when UC San Diego's Matt Vanni got through the defense and Tritons placekicker Jonathan Reyes converted.
 
"It felt like a good first day," said freshman front-rower Jack Manzo. "It was certainly great to get my first chance to represent these colors and this university."
 
Fellow frosh Streater, who kicked three conversions against UCSC before his 10 against UCSD made him 13-of-19 (.684) on the day, said, "Everyone tried to know their responsibilities and execute, and we seemed to take it on board to improve throughout the day."
 
Sophomore Thomas Spradling, a veteran relative to the 14 freshmen who made starts for the Bears on Saturday, said, "With a big group of new guys today, the work was exciting to see."
 
The Blue and Gold aim to put in a full day's work on Sunday in their one match against the Bruins, hoping to finish well at the Storer to conclude Cal's first competition weekend of the spring season.
