LOS ANGELES — The Golden Bears finished their four-match trip to the all-UC Dennis Storer Classic with a 45-0 win over UCLA Sunday on North Athletic Field. California notched seven tries while recording its third shutout of the weekend to begin the spring schedule of 15–a-side play.
 
Sophomore prop Damon Wiley scored two tries against the Bruins, the same total he recorded Saturday against UC Davis, as the Cal forwards accounted for all four first-half tries and the Bears jumped out to a 26-0 halftime lead.
 
Freshman Marcus Shankland and newcomer football crossover Aisea Tongilava finished the scoring for the Blue and Gold, which also got four conversions from flyhalf Jamie Howells (4-for-5) and one from Elliot Webb (1-for-2), who joined a steady flow of second-half replacements into action.
 
"We are off and running now. Every healthy player on the team got to open their competition account," said head coach Jack Clark. "We won't make much of these score lines, because they are really unimportant in the seasonal scheme of things, but we were organized and purposeful. It was a solid start."
 
"Today closed out a successful weekend," offered No. 8 Thomas Robles. "We put down starting blocks that we can build on."
 
"On and off the field, people have been putting in the work," said prop Kevin Sullivan. "It's great to complete this trip with everyone having the opportunity to contribute this weekend."
 
Howells agreed, adding, "We tried to stay focused and keep taking steps forward."
 
The Bears boarded their bus Sunday heading back to Berkeley, where the spring academic semester begins on Tuesday. Another bus ride awaits the squad next weekend, when the Bears visit Cal Poly for a 3 p.m. varsity match preceded by a reserve-grade content Saturday, January 20, in Arroyo Grande, Calif.. Cal's home opener on Witter Rugby Field takes place Saturday, January 27, against the Olympic Club at 1 p.m.
