No. 4 Bears Sweep MPSF Weekly Awards
BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team swept the MPSF weekly awards this week.
Sophomore
Emma Wright was named the conference Player of the Week while freshman
Elli Protopapas was tabbed as the Newcomer of the Week.
Wright had a dominant weekend at the season-opening Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, registering a hat trick in all three games as the Bears took down No. 6 Hawai'I, No. 23 Marist and No. 22 Loyola Marymount. Wright's nine goals came on just 11 shots and she also added six assists.
It is the second weekly award for Wright, who was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week once last season.
Protopapas, a freshman from Athens, Greece, excelled during her first taste of NCAA action, recording two goals, three assists and three steals during the weekend. Her goal late in the third quarter against No. 6 Hawai'I answered a Rainbow Wahine goal and immediately pushed the Bears' back to a more comfortable lead. Cal beat Hawai'I, 9-4.
The Bears (3-0) host the Cal Cup this weekend at Spieker Aquatics Complex against UC Davis, UC Irvine and Fresno State. The Bears also play the Chinese National Team in an exhibition game.
