Williams Wins Three Titles As Bears Fall at No. 14 ASU
TEMPE, Ariz. – California women's gymnastics wrapped up a four-meet season-opening road trip with a 194.850 loss at No. 14 Arizona State. The Sun Devils topped the Golden Bears with a 196.800.
Â
Cal took home 4 titles, led by phenom
Toni-Ann Williams, who took the crown on three events for the second week in a row. The redshirt senior matched her career-high and the program's best score on floor in school history, drawing a 10.0 from one judge to earn a 9.975. She also turned in the fifth-highest all-around total in school history with a 39.575, and won beam with a 9.90.
Sylvie Seilnacht logged a career-high 9.90 on vault in her return to the Golden Bear lineup to win the event.
Â
Though the Bears couldn't get past bars without counting a miss, Cal's lineup stayed locked in to turn in four scores of 9.80 or better.
Nina Schank, who took home her first collegiate event title with a career-high 9.925 last week, once again continued her impressive season on bars by leading the Bears with a 9.90 to earn second on the event. Williams set a season-high 9.85, as did bars anchor
Yuleen Sternberg with a 9.80. Even with the fall, Cal's 48.625 was its best in three meets.
Â
Sylvie Seilnacht's career-high 9.90 on vault was just one of the five routines which scored a career or season-best total.
Rachael Mastrangelo set a new personal best for her 9.825, and
Kyana George (9.85),
Cassidy Keelen (9.80) and
Arianna Robinson (9.825) all matched their season-bests. George and Williams both shared second with their 9.85s, and Cal stormed back from its first rotation with a season-high 49.250 on the event.
Â
At the halfway point, the Sun Devils led the Bears 98.425-97.875.
Â
The momentum grew as the Sun Devil lead shrunk with a season-high 49.200 by the Bears on floor. Williams' 9.975 was her first on the event since her freshman season in March 2015. Robinson continued another consistently solid outing with a season-high 9.85 on the event, and
Sofie Seilnacht matched her season-best 9.825.
Â
Cal faltered on beam and was forced to count two falls after mental errors marred the Bears' typically elegant beam sets. Cal wrapped up the rotation strong with
Alicia Gallarzo's 9.80, and Williams anchored with her season-high 9.90.
Â
Cal makes its home debut next Sunday, Feb. 4 against Arizona at 2 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.
