Antal Ties Cal's All-Time Scoring Mark

BERKELEY – Dora Antal insists she had no idea she was on the precipice of becoming Cal's all-time leading scorer on Sunday – which seems hard to believe considering all of the hooting and hollering coming from her teammates.

And it was that commotion coming from the Golden Bears bench that convinced Cal head coach Coralie Simmons to leave Antal in the fourth quarter of a lopsided game.

The No. 2 Bears spent much of the final quarter against No. 22 Fresno State trying to get the ball to Antal, and she had a handful of opportunities to register the goal that would put her on top of the program's all-time list. But she was never able to find the cage, and she left Spieker Aquatics Complex with 216 career goals, tied for first place with former Golden Bear standout Emily Csikos as Cal beat the Bulldogs 19-6 to wrap up the Cal Cup.

Antal scored five goals against Fresno State and four earlier in the day in a hard-fought 10-8 victory over No. 7 UC Irvine.

"Anytime I see my team enjoying the game and playing for each other – it's important for me to see the love of the game in them," Simmons said. "I saw that in how they were pulling for her. And she wasn't playing for herself there at the end. She was playing for the team. That's what is important."

Antal appeared to be a long shot to break the record this weekend, needing 16 goals in three games against ranked opponents. But she made a dent in the pursuit Saturday with six goals in a 15-6 victory over No. 11 UC Davis.  After scoring four more against the Anteaters, she recorded the Bears' first two goals against the Bulldogs and had three by halftime.

Antal scored two more in the third quarter to tie the record, but began the fourth period on the bench. Simmons inserted her back into the lineup shortly after, and all eyes were on her until the final horn sounded.

"I honestly hate having to deal with this," said Antal, the only three-time First Team All-American in program history. "If it's going to happen, it should come naturally and not forced. Nobody told me where I stood scoring-wise. But everyone was cheering for me."

Antal will now have to wait until Friday's game against No. 16 San Jose State at the Stanford Invitational to break the record.

The Bears (6-0) got off to a strong start against UC Irvine with a 4-1 lead only to watch the Anteaters come back to lead 5-4 at the half. Cal eventually went in front 9-6 then held off UCI after it trimmed the deficit to 9-8.

Junior Carla Carrega scored three goals in the win over the Anteaters, including two of the Bears' final three scores in the final seven minutes to help seal the win.

"They came in with the thought process that they were going to beat us by matching us physically, and we needed to do a better job of realizing that was going to happen," Simmons said. "It was a huge opportunity for us to have adversity in a game and come through. The stars aren't going to be aligned in every game, and we don't have to play our best to win every game. Wins don't always come easy, and it was nice to get through a game like that early in the season."

Freshman Elli Protopapas added three goals against the Bulldogs, and was one of 10 Golden Bears to score.

Along with San Jose State, the Bears will also again face UC Davis, No. 8 Michigan, and an opponent to be determined later.
