TULSA, Okla. – Golden Bears moved within two rounds of advancing to the main draws in singles and doubles on Monday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The California pair of Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi won twice – and posted an upset – in qualifying doubles to reach the third round.
 
In the first round, Brumm, a sophomore, and Kikuchi, a freshman, knocked off UC Santa Barbara's 30th-ranked Anders Holm and Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, 7-5, 6-1. The Bears then defeated Virginia's Ryan Goetz and Matthew Lord, 7-5, 6-3.
 
On the first day of qualifying singles, Kikuchi and sophomores Jack Molloy and Paul Barretto each won once to get closer to main draw, which starts Thursday. Barretto upset Oklahoma State's 114th-ranked Mathieu Scaglia, 6-2, 6-1 the 113th-ranked Molloy topped Nevada's Julien Evrard, 6-2, 7-6(7), and Kikuchi beat BYU's Jeffrey Hsu, 6-3, 6-4. Brumm, ranked 102nd, fell to Baylor's 85th-ranked Sven Lah.
 
Qualifying singles and doubles end on Tuesday in Tulsa.
 
If they advance to the main draws, the Bears would be competing for spots in the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, slated for Nov. 7-11, in Surprise, Arizona. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist move on to the national fall championships.
