SEATTLE – Three California doubles teams advanced to Friday's round of 16 and seven Golden Bears reached Friday's singles round of 64 after the first day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Thursday.
 
The University of Washington is hosting the regional matches at its Nordstrom Tennis Center and at the Seattle Tennis Club.
 
After first-round byes, Cal's second-seeded pair of sophomores Jack Molloy and Jackson Suh defeated David Abfalter and Matis Bot of Saint Mary's, 8-4, and the fifth-seeded duo of sophomore Jacob Brumm and freshman Yuta Kikuchi beat Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo and Ross Watson, 8-3, in the round of 32. Sophomores Can Kaya and Paul Barretto won twice, including an 8-6 victory over Santa Clara's Connor Garnett and Robert Seby in the round of 32. Juniors Dominic Barretto and Mert Zincirli won their opener but fell to David Goulak and Ivan Thamma, 8-4, in the second round.
 
Only one round of singles was played on Thursday, with seven of 10 Bears moving on to Friday's round of 64. Four Bears – the third-seeded Molloy, fourth-seeded Paul Barretto, fifth-seeded Brumm and fifth-seeded Kikuchi – advanced with byes. Hoffmann topped Eastern Washington's Jeremy Mueller, 6-2, 6-1, Suh beat the Gaels' Abfalter, 6-3, 6-1, and Dominic Barretto bested Eastern Washington's Jan Lajos, 6-0, 6-4.
 
The Seattle regional – one of 12 regional tournaments taking place around the country – concludes on Monday.
