Bears Reach Doubles Quarters, Singles Round Of 16
SEATTLE – California continued its run of doubles success this fall when it placed one pair –
Paul Barretto and
Can Kaya – in the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. The two Golden Bears defeated Stanford's Michael Genender and Timothy Sah, 8-7(3), in the round of 16 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Friday's round of 16 to advance.
The Bears knocked off the Cardinal's to set up the quarterfinal with Fresno State's Cem Erturk and Mantas Bugailiskis at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, the home of the University of Washington. Some early-round matches have also been played at the Seattle Tennis Club.

Jacob Brumm and freshman
Yuta Kikuchi – which upset the nation's No. 1 and No. 16 teams in the recent ITA Men's All-American Championships – needed to beat Oregon's Emmanuel Coste and Ty Gentry to join their teammates in the quarters. But the Bears lost to the Ducks, 8-6.
Fifth-seeded Cal sophomores
Jack Molloy and
Jackson Suh also fell in the round of 16 to Gonzaga's Sam Feit and Ruadhan O'Sullivan, 8-5.
Three Bears also won twice Friday to move into Saturday's singles round of 16.
The third-seeded and 113th-ranked Molloy beat Washington's Kawika Lam, 6-4, 6-0, in the round of 64 Friday and then topped Santa Clara's Jesus Tapiador Barajas, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, to advance. Brumm – ranked 102nd and co-seeded fifth – bested Stanford's Sam Turchetta, 6-3, 6-4, and then beat UW's Jack Davis, 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-1, in the round of 32. Kikuchi – also seeded fifth – first topped the Huskies' Alexis Alvarez, 6-3, 6-3, and then stopped Oregon's Joshua Charlton, 6-4, 6-4.

Paul Barretto won his round of 64 match, beating Eastern Washington's Martin Bats, 6-3, 6-1. But then the Bear lost to Portland's Nicklas Oberg, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 32. Barretto's older brother
Dominic Barretto, a Cal junior, fell in the round of 64 to Santa Clara's Arthur Neuhaus, 6-4, 6-3. Also falling in the round of 64 were Suh – Genender won that Cal-Stanford clash, 6-3, 6-2 – and junior
Bjorn Hoffmann, with Oregon's Riki Oshima prevailing, 6-1, 7-5.
Along with trying to capture regional titles, the Bears are hoping to advance to November's Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, as the regional doubles champions, singles champ and singles runner-up earn berths to the tournament.
