Six Bears Named To U.S. Roster For World University Games
Cal Sends Most Athletes Of Any School On Men’s Side
BERKELEY – A tremendous summer of 2018 continues to earn more opportunities for the Cal men's swimming team to make an impact on the international stage with USA Swimming announcing that six Golden Bears will compete for Team USA at the 2019 World University Games in Naples, Italy.
Sean Grieshop,
Connor Hoppe,
Michael Jensen,
Trenton Julian,
Bryce Mefford and
Nick Norman will don the Stars and Stripes from July 4-10 and that group represents the largest contingent from one school on the team. With five Cal swimmers – Nathan Adrian,
Ryan Murphy, Jacob Pebley, Josh Prenot and
Andrew Seliskar – already named to Team USA's roster for the 2019 World Championships, Thursday's announcement pushes Cal men's swimming's international roster to 11 with rosters for the Pan American Games still yet to be announced.
When it comes to the group headed to Italy, Cal will look to make its mark across a variety of events. Grieshop, who competed for Team USA at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, will compete in the 400-meter individual medley while Hoppe will represent his country in the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
Jensen earned a spot in the 50 freestyle, Julian made the team in the 200 butterfly and 800 free relay and Mefford is slated to swim both the 50 and 100 backstroke. Norman will take his turn in the distance events with a spot in both the 800 and 1,500 freestyle.
Five of the six Cal swimmers named to Team USA on Thursday will spend the 2018-19 collegiate season with their eyes trained on the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. Norman is in the midst of his senior season, Jensen is a junior and Grieshop, Julian and Mefford are sophomores for the Bears. Hoppe finished his collegiate career in 2018 as a two-time Pac-12 champion in the breaststroke and American record holder in the 200-yard medley relay.
