Elliot Webb scored a try and added two conversions vs. UCLA in Sunday's cup final.
TREASURE ISLAND — California finished an unbeaten two-day run through the West Coast Collegiate 7s on Treasure Island Sunday, capping a quarterfinal win over Utah and a semifinal victory against Arizona with a 19-5 win over UCLA in the cup final.
The Golden Bears (12-0 7s) will see the Utes, Wildcats and Bruins again when Cal hosts the conference tournament at the PAC Rugby 7s Championship Nov. 3-4 on Witter Rugby Field.
The Bears began their Sunday following their sweep of Pool A the previous day at the home of San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club with a 36-0 win over Utah. Sophomore
Marcus Shankland scored three of the Bears' six tries. Against Arizona in the semifinal,
Christian Dyer scored two tries and kicked the go-ahead conversion after his second score tied the match, and the Bears edged the Wildcats, 17-15.
In the cup final against UCLA,
Elliot Webb opened the scoring with his try down the left touchline at minute two, then converted
Sam Cusano's try near the right touchline to make it 12-5 at the half. Webb also converted
Zachary Tavenner's second-half insurance try to finish the weekend 7-for-10.
"Everyone contributed, including the underclassmen with big minutes," said Webb, who also recorded three tries over the weekend. "We're happy to have these wins over good teams we'll be hosting in two weeks time."
Captain
Nic Mirhashem said everyone who dons the Blue and Gold knows the standard expected. "Freshman through senior, when we put out on the jersey, we're accountable."
"We spread the minutes around the whole of the squad and we're grateful for the lessons of competition," added head coach
Jack Clark.
Preparations now turn to the conference tournament on Witter Rugby Field Nov. 3-4, when Cal hosts the 2018 PAC Rugby 7s Championship. The Bears will look to claim the conference crown at home in the two-day event in the same form of the game being contested for medals once again at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
