Bears Get Off To Good Start At Georgia Fall Invite
Cal Wins Both Relays, Adds Two Individual Victories To Take Lead In Team Standings
ATHENS, Ga. – Having flown across the country for a chance to test itself against some of the nation's top programs, the Cal men's swimming and diving team got off to a strong start at the Georgia Fall Invitational as a pair of relay wins and two individual victories provided highlights on day one at the University of Georgia.
Cal's relay strength provided a great place to start Friday's evening session and the team of
Pawel Sendyk,
Ryan Hoffer,
Michael Jensen and
Andrew Seliskar posted a 200-yard free relay time of 1:15.86 that not only gave the Bears the maximum 40 team points but also established the top time in the country so far this season.
That quartet wasn't the only Cal relay to find success right off the bat. The team of
Nate Biondi,
Zheng Wen Quah,
Bryce Mefford and
Daniel O'Connell won the first heat in a time of 1:19.09 that was good for third overall.
Action shifted to the 500 free and a strong morning swim landed three Golden Bears in the A final.
Trenton Julian would lead the Cal group to the wall with a fourth-place finish and time of 4:15.77.
Sean Grieshop placed fifth in 4:16.38 and
Nick Norman wasn't far behind in sixth at 4:16.43. Another standout Cal swim in the event came earlier in the day when Seliskar, who swam the 500 free as an exhibition, posted a time of 4:13.02 that stood for a few hours as best in the nation.
Cal carried its biggest contingent into the A final of the 200 IM with five swimmers earning a spot in the final thanks to a standout morning performance. Seliskar led the charge yet again, posting the fastest split in the field in the back, breast and free en route to a winning time of 1:40.55 that leads the nation. Quah led the race after the fly and took second in 1:44.02 while
Reece Whitley took sixth,
Bryce Mefford finished seventh and
Mike Thomas touched the wall eighth.
Four Golden Bears earned a spot in the A final of the 50 free and Sendyk notched Cal's second individual win of the meet with a time of 19.15. Jensen took third in 19.42, Hoffer placed fourth in 19.50 and Biondi finished seventh in 20.15.
Cal also got the meet underway on the boards as
Connor Callahan,
Johnny Robinson and
Jackson Gabler got their three-day stay in Georgia started with the 1-meter. Callahan led the group in the finals, placing third with a score of 320.55. Robinson finished eighth with a total of 290.05 and Gabler took 10
th with a score of 268.90.
The day concluded with a 1-2 Cal finish in the 400 medley relay as the team of
Daniel Carr, Whitley, Quah and Hoffer stopped the clock in 3:04.89 to win the final heat and claim a NCAA "A" qualifying time. Another group of Golden Bears also impressed in the first heat with Mefford, Seliskar, Sendyk and Jensen swimming to an "A" cut of 3:05.10 that ranked second overall.
After day one, Cal leads the team competition with 334 points. Michigan ranks second with 238 points, Georgia is third at 208 and Virginia is fourth at 157.
