Bears Set 2 Pool Records in Win at WSU
Cal Earns 158-95 Victory After Taking 13 Of 14 Events
PULLMAN, Wash. –
Katie McLaughlin,
Abbey Weitzeil,
Cassidy Bayer and
Ema Rajic won two events apiece and Cal set a pair of Gibb Pool records en route to a 158-95 dual-meet victory over Washington State Saturday.
Â
The Golden Bears started things off with a pool mark in the 200-yard medley relay as the foursome of
Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou, Rajic, Weitzeil and
Alicia Wilson touched in 1:42.51 to lower the record by 0.01 seconds. Weitzeil also put her name in the record book individually with her time of 49.42 in the 100 free later in the meet.
Â
Bayer, a freshman, picked her two individual victories in the 1000 free (10:14.01) and the 200 butterfly (1:59.39), while fellow freshman Rajic earned her first-place finishes both breaststroke events, taking the 100-yard distance in 1:03.39 and the 200-yard race in 2:15.45.
Â
Weitzeil added the 100 backstroke (54.91) to her 100 free title, and McLaughlin won the 50 free in 23.09 – more than a second ahead of runner-up
Robin Neumann – and the 400 individual medley (4:20.03).
Â
Courtney Mykkanen (200 back, 2:02.26), Neumann (500 free, 4:57.67) and
Elise Garcia (100 fly, 55.52) also claimed individual victories, and the 200 free relay of Bayer,
Jenna Campbell,
Ali Harrison and Weitzeil closed the meet with a winning time of 1:34.83. Overall, the Bears prevailed in 13 of 14 events – all but the 200 free.
Â
"Overall, we had fairly good day," head coach
Teri McKeever said. "We're learning more about each other as a group and the things that we need to work on with every meet. We're looking forward to having Texas come in next week and more good racing."
Â
Cal returns to action next Saturday in a showdown of top teams when Texas visits Berkeley for a 12 noon start at Legends Aquatic Center. The Bears were the NCAA runner-ups last year, while the Longhorns finished sixth at the national meet. Admission is free.
