ATHENS, Ga. – Wins in two more relays, the first individual title at a collegiate invitational for freshman Reece Whitley, a backstroke win from sophomore Daniel Carr and a historic swim from Andrew Seliskar helped the Cal men's swimming and diving team maintain its advantage in the team standings as the Bears took another step forward on day two of the Georgia Fall Invitational.

Cal showcased its depth right away Friday, winning both heats of the 200-yard medley relay with times that ranked 1-2 in the nation. The team of Bryce Mefford, Carson Sand, Zheng Wen Quah and Ryan Hoffer stopped the clock with a mark of 1:24.12 that stood for a few minutes as best in the country, earning an NCAA "A" qualifying time and winning the first heat.

Moments later, Carr gave Cal the lead with a 21.27-second split in the backstroke and Whitley, Pawel Sendyk and Michael Jensen expanded on that advantage to help the Bears win with a final time of 1:23.42.

Having qualified 17 swimmers for A finals in the morning session, Cal caps were easy to spot on Friday night with multiple entrants in nearly every race. In the 100 breast, that meant a pair of Golden Bears battling for the lead as Whitley, who dropped a NCAA "A" cut in the morning, dueled with senior Carson Sand for the title. The duo sat 1-2 at the 50-yard mark and that's where they finished as Whitley swam to a time of 51.77 and Sand a time of 52.48 to complete the exacta for Cal.

In the 100 back, six Cal swimmers qualified for the A final but only four swam the event as Carr, Ethan Young, Andy Song and David Puczkowski took the blocks in the evening. After a delay to fix the starting blocks, Carr jumped out to the lead and never looked back, turning in a time of 46.58 that gave him his second win in the event in two trips to Athens as a Golden Bear. Young placed third, Puczkowski fifth and Song seventh.

Four Golden Bears took the blocks in the A final of the 400 IM and sophomore Sean Grieshop used a strong back half to lead the Cal contingent to the wall, placing second in 3:42.80. Senior Mike Thomas took third in 3:43.43, sophomore Trenton Julian finished fifth and freshman Chris Jhong placed eighth.

Cal sent four more swimmers to the A final in the 100 fly and a tight race throughout saw Quah touch the wall second with a time of 45.58. Seliskar followed a brilliant day one with a third-place finish and both followed strong morning swims in which Quah swam the nation's fastest time this year (45.38) and Seliskar the country's third-fastest time (45.47). Hoffer dropped time in the evening to take fourth while Sendyk took eighth.

Mefford gave Cal it's lone representative in the A final of the 200 free and the sophomore dropped over a second from his morning time to take second in 1:34.79.

Day two of diving saw junior Connor Callahan continue a strong start to the 2018-19 season as a score of 358.50 on the 3-meter board earned second place and a second podium finish in as many days. Jackson Gabler and Johnny Robinson also competed in the 3-meter finals and took 10th and 11th, respectively.

The day wrapped up with the 800 free relay and the Bears swam away from the field right from the start to earn another victory. Seliskar, Mefford, Quah and Thomas finished in a time of 6:14.65 that leads the nation and Seliskar laid down perhaps the most impressive effort of the day, swimming to a leadoff 200 time of 1:30.86 that is a 200 free school record and the third-fastest mark in NCAA history.

Cal begins Saturday's final day of competition with a team score of 791 points to lead the overall competition. Michigan ranks second at 715, Georgia enters the day with 555 points and Virginia is fourth at 322. Plenty of action remains as swimmers will contest the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay while divers finish the weekend with the Platform.
