Relay Win, Weitzeil Record Highlight Final Day In Georgia
Strong Freestyle Efforts Help Cal Wrap Up Georgia Fall Invitational
ATHENS, Ga. – On the final day of the Georgia Fall Invitational Saturday, junior
Abbey Weitzeil set a school record in the 100-yard freestyle and anchored Cal's 400 free relay to victory, capping a speedy weekend in which she won both sprint free events and helped four relays to impressive wins.
Â
Weitzeil lowered her own school mark in the 100 free to 46.49 seconds, as she held of Michigan's Siobhan Haughey, who touched in 46.72. Weitzeil built a good lead through the first 50 yards, making the turn at 22.33 before coming home to lower her own record of 46.63 set at last year's NCAA Championships.
Â
Weitzeil then helped the Bears close out the three-day meet with a best-in-the-nation time of 3:11.14, as she produced a 46.66 split on the anchor leg.
Keaton Blovad led off, followed by
Robin Neumann and
Katie McLaughlin. By the time Weitzeil entered the water, Cal held a one-second lead over Michigan, and once Weitzeil reached her final wall, the Bears had a three-second victory.
Â
Cal sent a trio of swimmers to the A final of the 200 fly and McLaughlin led the group home with a second-place finish and time of 1:54.63.
Cassidy Bayer took sixth and
Sarah Darcel placed eighth to round out the Golden Bear contingent.
Â
Blovad followed a second-place finish in the 100 back with another good evening swim in the 200, winning the B final with a time of 1:53.79 that would have gotten her to the wall first in the A final.
Courtney Mykkanen represented the Bears in that A final and finished fifth.
Ema Rajic also won the B final of the 200 breast, dropping over two seconds from her morning swim in the process with a time of 2:11.72 that ranks ninth on Cal's all-time list.
Â
Cal's divers also wrapped up three days of action in Georgia with the Platform competition.
Alexa Cacao led the way by finishing fifth with a score of 257.65,
Briana Thai took sixth with a mark of 249.25 and
Jackie Im finished 12th at 224.95.
"Abbey had a really solid meet, posting the leading time in the country in the 50 free and setting a school record in the 100 free," head coach
Teri McKeever said. "She also swam a solid 200 free and 100 breast and was an integral part on all of our relays. Others swimmers who stood out included
Ema Rajic and
Alexa Buckley, who both had several lifetime bests, and Katie McLauglhin, who swam a lot of different events for us and played a key role on five relays. It was also good to see
Keaton Blovad step up and assume her role on the A relays, and
Robin Neumann likely secured her spot at NCAAs with her 200 free time. Overall, there are a lot of nice things to build on. The competition was strong and the environment, especially being alongside our men's team, really good."
Â
Cal finished the week third in the team standings, scoring 827.5 points over the three-day meet. Michigan placed first with 944 team points and the host Bulldogs ranked second with 835.
