Abbey Weitzeil Claims Pac-12 Swimmer Of The Month Honors
Junior Leads The Nation In Two Events, Including A School Record In The 100 Free
BERKELEY – Cal junior
Abbey Weitzeil, who played a role in seven NCAA A standard qualifying swims at the Georgia Fall Invitational last week, has been named the Pac-12 Women's Swimmer of the Month for November.
At the Georgia meet, Weitzeil earned a pair of individual victories with times that are the fastest in the nation so far this year. First, she captured the 50-yard freestyle in 21.46 seconds. Then on the final day of the three-day meet, she lowered her own school record in the 100 free, touching in 46.49 to again post a No. 1 national time.
In addition, Weitzeil had a hand in five Golden Bear relays that all rank among the three fastest in the NCAA – the 200, 400 and 800 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays. She also set personal bests in two other races, going 1:00.43 in the 100 breaststroke and 1:43.85 in the 200 free prelims.
Earlier in the month, Weitzeil won the 100 free and 100 backstroke, as well as swam legs on winning 200 medley and 200 free relays, in a dual meet at Washington State. Her 100 free and 200 medley relay times both set Gibb Pool records.
On Nov. 10 in a home dual meet vs. Texas, Weitzeil tied her Cal dual-meet record in the 50 free (22.04), won the 100 free and anchored the 200 medley and 200 free relay to victories.
This is the second Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month award for Weitzeil, who claimed the honor last November based on her performance at the 2017 Georgia Fall Invite. She was also the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for Feb. 14, 2018.
