GRENOBLE, France – With Amanda Augustus back on the U.S. coaching staff, the United States returned to championship form to capture the championship of the 2018 Master'U BNP Paribas tournament. In the final of the international university competition, played indoors at the Centre de Ligue Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes de tennis, the Cal women's tennis boss and U.S. co-coach Greg Patton led the Americans past defending champion Great Britain, 4-1, on Dec. 2.

Composed of three college women's players and three college men's players, the U.S. team captured its eighth tournament title with the victory and avenged its loss to Great Britain in the 2017 final. The previous U.S. championship came in 2016. The USA likewise won the title in 2015, which was the last time Augustus was on staff and which also featured former Cal All-American Maegan Manasse on the U.S. squad. Additionally, Augustus coached on the USA's title-winning teams from 2012-14.

"It was just an honor to be asked to coach," she said. "It's not often we're asked to represent our country in our sport. When the opportunity arises, it's great to be of service to U.S. Tennis and help the top American collegians. We had a great group this year. We had some tough matches, but it was a lot of fun. It's a great event. The French provide great hospitality. It was really a special week, and I'm quite glad we were able to come away with the gold."

Augustus and her Golden Bears will return to the courts when they host the Cal Winter Invitational from Jan. 11-13, 2019, at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
