PALM DESERT, CA – Cal (275-274-268 – 817, -47) rolled to its third victory of the season by shooting a tournament-best 20-under par third and final round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday at the par-72, 7322-yard Classic Club.
Sebastian Crampton (67-69-66 – 202, -14) and
Collin Morikawa (68-69-65 – 202, -14) were among four players to share individual medalist honors with the victory the first of Crampton's collegiate career while Morikawa won for the second time and also reached a playoff on one other occasion.
Cal's 47-under par score was its second-lowest 54-hole tournament mark in school history behind only a 48-under par effort of 804 at the 2010 Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The Golden Bears finished 20 strokes ahead of second-place Texas Tech (284-280-273 – 837, -27) for their largest margin of victory since a 22-stroke win in the 2013 Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
"We played so well this tournament," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun said. "I am so proud of these guys. They have worked really hard, and it's great to see it all paying off.
"It was simply an amazing team effort this week," Morikawa said. "From the start of the week we had a game plan and we stuck to it the entire week. This week we showed what we are capable of and we will use this momentum heading into the rest of the spring."
"Winning the team title by 20 strokes definitely makes a statement and reinforced what we've been working on," Crampton said. "However, I still don't think we're at our best and we want to build on the momentum that we have from this week going forward."
"It was awesome to share the individual victory with Seb," Morikawa said. "He played great all week and it's amazing that we had the opportunity to both come out on top."
Crampton and Morikawa both had seven birdies in Sunday's final round with the lone bogey between the two coming from Crampton. Morikawa birdied four of his final five holes (14, 15, 17, 18) to capture a share of the lead including a key 30-foot birdie to start the stretch on the par-five 14th. Crampton had four of his birdies on the back nine (11, 13, 14, 17) but was unable to pull off a fifth on the par-five 18th hole that would have given him outright individual medalist honors. Both birdied the par-five fourth and par-four eighth holes on the front nine, while Crampton also had a birdie on the par-three second and his bogey on the par-four seventh that he followed with his birdie on the eighth hole when he hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker but rebounded by putting his approach within four feet of the cup.
Crampton and Morikawa became the first Cal players to share an individual title since Brandon Hagy and Joël Stalter were the co-medalists at the Arizona Intercollegiate in 2014. Both tied a career-best with their 14-under par 54-hole scores.
Texas Tech's Fredrik Nilehn (70-67-65 – 202, -14) and Oklahoma State's Austin Eckroat (68-70-64 – 202, -14) were the other players in the foursome that shared individual medalist honors.
Jamie Cheatham (68-67-72 – 207, -9) was the next Cal golfer on the leaderboard with a tied for fifth-place finish that was the best of his collegiate career with his 54-hole score also a career best.
KK Limbhasut (72-70-69 – 211, -5) tied for 11th and
Ben Doyle (78-69-68 – 215, -1) tied for 25th with both Doyle's round on Sunday and finish tied for his best of the season.
Finigan Tilly (74-71-73 – 218, +2) tied for 38th playing as an individual.
Cheatham had four birdies (2, 13, 14, 18) and four bogeys (3, 5, 12, 16) in his Sunday round, while Limbhasut had five birdies (4, 5, 6, 17, 18) and two bogeys (7, 10), Doyle six birdies (2, 5, 8, 13, 14, 16) and two bogeys (10, 15), and Tilly four birdies (4, 8, 16, 17), three bogeys (6, 7, 9) and one double bogey (11).
Cal returns to action March 4-6 at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate co-hosted by Arkansas and Houston at the Querencia Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Collin Morikawa and Sebastian Crampton hoist the individual medalist hardware at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
