Antal Breaks Cal Career Scoring Record
STANFORD – Senior
Dora Antal became Cal's all-time leading scorer and the No. 2 Bears erupted for nine consecutive goals to break it open in an 18-3 victory over No. 17 San Jose State on Saturday on the first day of the Stanford Invitational.
The Bears came back to edge No. 9 Michigan 11-10 later in the day.
Antal scored a goal with 4:38 left in the first quarter to break a tie with previous all-time leader Emily Csikos and giver her 217 career goals. Antal added two more and now has 219 in her career.
"It's hard to handle mentally," Antal said.. "Your teammates and everyone around you wants you to score. Today I just came out and just wanted to have a fun game and just play my own game. I didn't want to think about it."
Antal tied Cikos' record at last weekend's Cal Cup by scoring 15 goals in three games. She had multiple attempts to break the record in the final game of the tournament against Fresno State but couldn't score.
"It's pretty cool, but I feel like I couldn't accomplish this without my teammates, without my staff members and all of the people who are working behind us," Antal said. I" feel like it's not only my accomplishment, it's the whole team's accomplishment."
Csikos, now Emily Kowalsky, sent Antal a congratulatory e-mail after the game.
"I think it's incredibly exciting and I am very happy for her and the rest of the team," Kowalsky said. "Hopefully, I will be able to congratulate her in person one day."
Senior
Anna Illes, sophomores
Hannah DeRose and
Jackie Sanders and freshman
Kitty Lynn Joustra each added a pair of goals against the Spartans.
Senior
Carla Carrega erupted for five goals in the second half, including the Bears' final four goals, to help Cal (8-0) hold off a late charge by the Wolverines. Joustra added four more goals and sophomore
Emma Wright scored two.
Michigan took an early 3-1 lead but the Bears came back to tie the game at 5-5 at the half. Joustra and Carrega scored the first two goals of the third period to help Cal go out in front. After the Wolverines got to within 9-8, Carrega scored back-to-back goals to push the lead back to three. Michigan scored two late goals, the last coming with 43 seconds left, but couldn't register the equalizer.
The Bears are back in action at the Stanford Invitational on Sunday morning against No. 11 UC Davis. Cal will advance to the tournament championship game with a win over the Aggies.
