Cal At Stanford Wednesday Night

Match For Scrum Axe At 6:30 p.m.

BERKELEY – A tradition dating back to the early 20th Century continues Wednesday night at Stanford, as California and the Cardinal play in the match for the Scrum Axe at 6:30 p.m. in Steuber Rugby Stadium.

The Golden Bears (7-0, 0-0 PAC) will begin PAC Rugby Conference play looking to extend their winning streak over the Cardinal, which dates back to 1997 following Stanford's last win in 1996.

Cal projects to start a lineup on Wednesday night comprised almost exclusively of freshmen and sophomores, and almost completely different from the starting XV in its last outing, an 85-10 win at San Diego State on February 3.

It will be the third straight home match for Stanford (0-3, 0-1 PAC), which most recently lost to Nevada, 36-17, on February 3, following a defeat at the hands of San Jose State, 65-10 on January 27. The Cardinal opened its spring with a conference loss at Arizona, 76-17.

The Bears will aim for a positive performance before a quick turnaround following this match to welcome fans back to Witter Rugby Field Saturday, February 10, for Parents Weekend as the Blue and Gold host a doubleheader vs. Cal Maritime at 11 a.m. and Utah Valley University at 1 p.m.
