Ryan Hoffer Named Pac-12 Swimmer Of The Week

BERKELEY - After winning two individual events as well as a relay to help the Cal men's swimming team earn a dual meet win at USC, freshman Ryan Hoffer earned some recognition for his impact on the Bears' victory as the Pac-12 has named him its Swimmer of the Week.

The award, which shifted from a monthly honor to a weekly format in mid-January, is the first for Hoffer as a Golden Bear. The native of Scottsdale, Ariz. hasn't taken long to establish himself as a major contributor at Cal, ranking fourth in the country in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free in addition to swimming on four of Cal's five relays.

Against the Trojans, Hoffer was again in the middle of the action as the Bears beat USC 168-123 at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. He swam the anchor leg on Cal's winning 200 medley relay to get the day started, then stopped the clock in 19.79 seconds to lead a Cal sweep of the 50 free. He added a win in the 100 free, swimming to a time of 44.20 seconds, and helped the Bears take second in the 400 free relay to close the day.

Hoffer and the Bears have just one dual meet remaining in the 2017-18 season and will travel to Stanford on Feb. 17 for a noon showdown. From there, focus shifts to the postseason with the Pac-12 Championships scheduled for Feb. 28-March 4 in Federal Way, Wash. The 2018 NCAA Championships will take place March 21-24 in Minneapolis, Minn.
