Morikawa Wraps Up Arnold Palmer Invitational
Cal Junior Finishes Tied For 64th At Two-Over Par Overall After Final-Round 75
ORLANDO, Fla. – Cal junior
Collin Morikawa wrapped up play in his second career PGA TOUR start as an amateur Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard on Sunday. Morikawa (72-72-71-75 – 290, +2) finished in a tie for 64th place overall after a final-round three-over par 75 on Sunday at Bay Hill Country Club & Lodge.
"Getting this opportunity to play in the API was such a memorable experience," Morikawa said. "Although I didn't play great, being able to honor and represent the legacy of Mr. Arnold Palmer is very special. There's much to learn from this week and I feel like I improved a lot from my first PGA TOUR start at the Safeway Open in 2016."
"It was special to see Collin compete at Bay Hill," Cal's Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun said. "It's every college golfer's dream to tee it up on the PGA TOUR and to see Collin do that at Mr. Palmer's event will be a memory that I'll forever have as coach. A special thank you to the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Cup for such a tremendous opportunity for not only Collin but myself."
Morikawa became the first Cal player to make the cut at a professional golf event while playing as an amateur since Michael Kim and Michael Weaver at the 2013 U.S. Open when Kim was the low amateur and tied for 17th overall while Weaver finished 64th. Morikawa missed the cut in his previous PGA TOUR start as an amateur at the 2016 Safeway Open at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa Valley.
Morikawa was playing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard after his Team USA teammates at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup selected him for the Americans' one exemption to the event after he helped lead Team USA to a victory last June.
Rory McIlroy (69-70-67-64 – 270, -18) won the event by three strokes after firing a final-round eight-under par 64 on Sunday while a pair of former Cal players Byeong Hun-An (68-68-72-74 – 282, -6) and James Hahn (71-71-75-72 – 289, +1) were also in the field, finishing tied for 14th and tied for 58th. The other amateur playing in the event was Clemson sophomore Doc Redman (72-72-72-77 – 293, +5), who also made the cut and finished three strokes behind Morikawa in sole possession of 71st. Redman earned his exemption into the event by winning the 2017 U.S. Amateur.
Morikawa had only a single birdie in the event's fourth and final round Sunday when he reached the par-five 16th hole in two and tapped in from inside a foot after missing a 13-foot eagle putt. His four bogeys came on the par-five fourth, and par-four ninth, 13th and 15th holes. Morikawa hit 12 of 18 greens in regulation on Sunday but was unable to connect on a single putt outside of five feet.
"My game still needs work especially with putting, but I have a couple of weeks to put everything together and go out there and help the team at The Goodwin," Morikawa said.
Morikawa and his Cal teammates will return to collegiate action March 29-31 at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
