Cal Track & Field Takes On Seven Top Teams From Around The Country In Tempe

BERKELEY, Calif. – California track & field will continue the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. The Bears will see some of the top competitors from around the country.
 
The Big Ten will be represented by Indiana, a top-10 men's team and No. 16 women's team from Nebraska, 24/18 Michigan and 16/NR Penn State. The host, Arizona State (NR/14), and NR/15 Colorado will represent the Pac-12 alongside Cal. After a cancellation of another Pac-12 school, LSU will complete the field.
 
Friday's competition will feature only a couple of events as the hammer and javelin get the competition underway starting at 1 p.m.  Saturday's action starts at 1:30 p.m. with the women's discus throw while the track events start at 5:20 p.m. with the women's 100m hurdles.
 
Cal will send a competitive contingent which includes four Bears who competed at the NCAA Indoor Championship who are set to make their outdoor debut.
 
Ashtyn Davis will transition from taking third in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Championship to competing in the 110m hurdles. McKay Johnson will take part in the discus and shot put competitions after taking eighth in the shot put during the indoor season. Tuomas Kaukolahti will switch over to the long jump for Saturday's competition after taking fifth in the triple jump. Finally, Lauren Martinez will return to the pole vault after setting a school record in the indoor pole vault during the indoor season.
 
Additionally, a large contingent of distance runners will make their outdoor debuts after going through rigorous training over the last couple weeks.
 
Isabella Marten will look to continue a great start to the outdoor season after winning Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week this past week. Marten collected the third-best triple jump in the country at 19-7.00 at the Hornet Invitational last weekend and collected the first weekly Pac-12 Award.
