Bears’ 17 Tries Defeat Dartmouth
101-31 Win In Regular-Season Home Finale
BERKELEY – On the weekend of Charter Day celebrating the 150th anniversary of the University of California, 13 Golden Bears scored a total of 17 tries, including three by winger
Justin Dunn, as Cal beat Dartmouth College, 101-31, Saturday on Witter Rugby Field.
In the final home match of the regular-season schedule, Cal (19-1, 6-0 PAC) looked dangerous against the Big Green, scoring several long-distance tries and reaching the century mark on the scoreboard for the fifth time this spring, doing it on Saturday against the Ivy Conference champion in Dartmouth, which fell to 6-4 on the year ( 6-0 Ivy).
"We were good in patches," said head coach
Jack Clark. "Sometimes we forget to do the hard parts of the game before the open, fun parts. There is no doubting we are still a work in progress. Our best rugby is still inside us."
Prop
Kevin Sullivan and wing
Sam Cusano were the other multi-try scorers for the Bears, whose conversions came from
Christian Dyer (4-for-11) and
Jamie Howells (4-for-6). Scrumhalf
Keanu Andrade was back in a starting role after taking a weekend off against Utah,
Cormac Heaney started in the back row for the second straight weekend and
Troy Lockyear made his third consecutive start at flyhalf.
"Getting these minutes has been great. I've felt much better with each match that I've played," Lockyear said.
On a day when the Bears played with enough sloppiness to allow four Dartmouth tries scored off of Cal skill breakdowns resulting in turnovers, Dunn showed well, proving to be lethal and tough on the outside for the Blue and Gold.
"I'm looking forward to getting into the film room tomorrow morning, getting some lessons from this match and applying them as we keep moving forward, "Dunn said.
"Dartmouth were pure class," added coach Clark. "Fine men that came into Strawberry Canyon and scored four tries."
One match remains on the Bears' regular-season schedule: Saturday, April 7, at Saint Mary's in a 1 p.m. kickoff. The following weekend, Cal is expected to host a match in Round One of the National Collegiate Postseason on Witter Rugby Field against an opponent and at a time to be announced.
