SAN FRANCISCO â Cal (282-271-278 â 831, -21) made a late run at defending national champion Oklahoma (279-269-280 â 821, -21) on a cool and cloudy Saturday before settling for its second straight runner-up finish at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford at the par-71, 7,143-yard TPC Harding Park.
Sebastian Crampton (71-66-68 â 205, -8) led the Golden Bears with a third-place finish while
Jamie Cheatham celebrated his 21st birthday with the first hole-in-one of his career on the par-three 17th hole.
"It's really satisfying [to finish third]," said Crampton who was in the top three for the third time in nine tournaments this season. "I got off to a pretty poor start, but I fought back by shooting eight-under the last two rounds. I couldn't quite get the putts to fall but overall I'm happy with it."
Cheatham's hole-in-one was a big part of Cal's comeback attempt.
"It was a crazy moment," Cheatham said. "It was really exciting. It was my first one ever and I'm really, really happy about it. I was fortunate to have it happen on my 21st birthday. It was just awesome."
Collin Morikawa (66-69-72 â 207, -6) tied for fifth and
Finigan Tilly (70-72-69 â 211, -2) tied for 15th to give the Golden Bears three top-15 finishes while Cheatham (75-69-69 â 213, E) tied for 27th and
KK Limbhasut (77-67-72 â 216, +3) tied for 42nd to round out the Bears' lineup.
Kaiwen Liu (74-72-68 â 214, +1) played as an individual and matched Crampton's three-under par 68 on Saturday while finishing tied for 32nd overall up 33 spots from where he started the final round.
"It was a complete team effort the last three days," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun said. "Yes, we came up short of Oklahoma, but there is no doubt in my mind that this team has the heart, soul and character to be one of the best teams in the country."
Crampton left off where he ended Friday when he birdied four of his final six holes by making birdie on four of his first seven holes Saturday (1, 4, 6, 7) although he did also have a pair of bogeys (2, 5) during the stretch and stood at two-under par for the round after seven holes. After making just a single par on his first seven holes, Crampton steadied for the remainder of the round with 10 pars over his final 11 holes and a birdie on the par-three 11th.
Morikawa had a tough day by his standards with a one-over par 72 that ended a string of nine consecutive rounds in the 60's. He did birdie the par-four first hole to lead off his round but then had back-to-back bogeys on the par-four fifth and sixth holes before a double-bogey five on the par-three eighth. He was able to steady his round with seven consecutive pars before back-to-back birdies on the par-four 16th and par-three 17th helped him to his sixth top-five finish in eight events this season.
"My game just wasn't there," Morikawa said. "I hung on and it's another great learning experience to draw on, but for myself and the team we're out there to win so when that doesn't happen we really get back to work and get ready for the next event."
Tilly's tied for 15th finish was the best of his career and he highlighted his two-under par season-best round of 69 on Saturday by making birdie on each of the course's three par-fives (4, 9, 10). He also birdied the par-four first and 16th holes while his three bogeys came on the par-three eighth and par-four 12th and 13th.
"I felt pretty comfortable today," Tilly said. "I have been working hard recently and am happy to see my game moving in the right direction. The conditions were tough, but I knew we needed to perform in order to have a chance at winning the tournament. I look forward to have a strong end of the season and post-season with the team."
Cheatham moved up 20 spots from where he began the day and notched his second consecutive round of two-under par 69 despite a two-over par 38 on the front nine with bogeys on both par-threes (3, 8). He got those two strokes back on the first two holes of the back nine with birdies on the par-five 10th and par-three 11th before knocking in a six-iron for his hole-in-one on 17.
Limbhasut had little drama in his one-over par round of 72 with 15 pars, one birdie on the par-five fourth and two bogeys on the par-four first and 14th.
Liu had five birdies (2, 5, 9, 10, 18) and two bogeys (6, 15) in his three-under par round of 68 that tied for the second-best of his career.
Oregon's Norman Xiong (65-65-68 â 198, -15) was the individual medalist with a six-stroke advantage over second-place Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford (63-71-70 â 204, -9).
Cal will conclude its regular season April 7-8 at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz before post-season action begins April 23-25 with the Pac-12 Championships co-hosted by the Pac-12 and USC at Rolling Hills Country Club.Â
