Bears Show Speed At Pac-12 Challenge
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Coming off an impressive sweep to start the season at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Cal women's rowing team carried that momentum back to northern California, completing another sweep at the Pac-12 Challenge held at Redwood Shores. Ranked No. 2 in the nation in the first USRowing/CRCA Coaches' Poll of the year, the Golden Bears won all 12 of their races at the two-day regatta, posting wins over No. 10 Stanford, No. 17 Iowa, No. 18 Michigan State, and Louisville.
"Our team did a great job racing hard all weekend long," said head coach
Al Acosta. "All the boats posted good times, and yet we still feel there is room for improvement. We're looking forward to getting some rest and then getting back at it to prepare for the Lake Natoma Invitational in two weeks."
The Bears started the racing Saturday morning with an impressive showing from the varsity eight. Cal crossed the line in a time of 6:10.13, more than nine second ahead of the 17
th-ranked Hawkeyes, and the fastest time by any crew all weekend. Cal followed it up with head-to-head wins over Iowa by the second varsity eight and varsity four, while the second varsity four topped Stanford, 7:06.6 to 7:28.8.
After a break in the action, racing resumed in the afternoon with the Bears' third and fourth varsity eights taking on the Stanford lightweights. Cal won both races over its Bay Area rivals, followed by head-to-head wins over No. 18 Michigan State by the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four boats.
Cal continued to impress on Sunday morning, besting the Louisville Cardinals in all three championship events to cap off another weekend sweep.
