Sophomore Thomas Spradling and the Bears won Pool B to advance to the cup quarterfinals at the National College 7s.
GLENDALE, Colo. — California swept three matches to win Pool B Friday at the National 7s in Infinity Park, beating Indiana, 31-14, Fordham, 50-5, and Notre Dame College, 34-12, to earn a slot in Saturday's cup quarterfinals against Arkansas at 11 a.m. MT.
Â
The Razorbacks went 2-1 in Pool A, beating Utah and Missouri and losing to Lindenwood, to advance to their meeting with the Golden Bears in the cup quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal matchups on Saturday will be Arizona vs. Kutztown, Indiana vs. Lindenwood and Wisconsin vs. Grand Canyon.
Â
Saturday's meeting between Cal and Arkansas will be their first in 7s.
Â
If the Bears defeat the Razorbacks to advance into the semifinals, they will face the winner of the Arizona-Kutztown quarterfinal at 4 p.m. MT. Saturday's championship cup final is scheduled to kick off at 8:40 p.m. MT.
Â
The Bears began their Friday by outscoring the Hoosiers, five tries to two, as
Troy Lockyear kicked two conversions and
Elliot Webb added one after dotting down a try to end the scoring. Webb then added two tries and five conversions as Cal next defeated Fordham, 50-5, on eight tries scored. Six different student-athletes scored tries for the Blue and Gold against Notre Dame College as the team exited pool play with a +84 point differential and +14 try differential.
Â
"It was deflating to lose
Thomas Robles in the opening minutes of the first match to injury," said head coach
Jack Clark. "Tom is so important to this particular Cal team, in that he's a senior, he's an operator, he's just tougher than the younger guys. This said, we played pretty well in his absence. So we wake tomorrow and give it another lash."
Â
Rain and wind are expected to be factors on Saturday as the Rugby Bears enter the cup bracket with a chance to earn their way toward a national 7s title.
