Viltz Heads To USATF Championship
Hurdler Looks Toward American Title
DES MOINES, Iowa –
Misana Viltz will head to the USATF Senior Outdoor Championships this weekend at Drake Stadium. The competition featuring the best American track & field athletes will begin on Thursday and run through Sunday in Iowa.
Viltz will take to the track at 2:35 p.m. CT/12:35 p.m. PT on Saturday afternoon for the first round. If he advances, the semifinals will be at 2:30 p.m CT/12:30 p.m. PT on Sunday followed by the finals at 4:52 p.m. CT/2:52 p.m. PT. The first round and semifinals will be available on the subscription package, NBC Sports Gold. While the final will be part of the NBC coverage on Sunday.
Viltz transferred into Cal for the 2017-18 season, competing during the indoor season. However, with one year of eligibility remaining he redshirted the outdoor season so that he could return in 2018-19 for both indoor and outdoors.
Viltz posted a season-best time of 8.04 seconds in the 60m hurdles as he took fourth at the UW Invitational. He also posted a mark of 8.07 at the Husky Classic as he took third.
He competed as an unattached athlete at a couple meets this spring in order to post his qualifying mark of 13.74. Viltz recorded that mark at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe. He took second to Aries Merritt, a 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist. That mark ranks 17
th in the field of 23 who declared for the USATF Championship.
Viltz also posted three wins throughout the spring as he won the competition at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational and the Stanford Invitational. He won at Stanford by notching a time of 13.85 seconds.
