BERKELEY – Former California women's tennis star Julie Wirth is now making her mark in golf, as she qualified for the U.S. Senior Women's Open Championship on June 12 at San Francisco's Olympic Club. The inaugural championship is set to run from July 12-15 at the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois.

Wirth shot a 7-over 78 to finish tied for fifth in the qualifying tournament. She then won a three-hole playoff to capture a berth in the 120-player championship field.

Under her maiden name of Julie Grummel, Wirth competed in tennis at Cal from 1982-85. Now a supporter of the Cal women's tennis program, Wirth earned All-America honors for the Golden Bears in 1983, when she partnered with Barrie Bulmore to reach the NCAA doubles semifinals.
