SAN FRANCISCO – Commissioner Larry Scott and the Pac-12 Offices announced the 2018 Pac-12 Men's Rowing All-Academic Team on Tuesday, with seniors Alex Wallis and Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk headlining the First Team. Senior Maxwell Hall and juniors Maarten Hurkmans and Ferdinand Querfeld  were named to the Second Team while an additional nine Golden Bears earned honorable mention recognition: Jared Arat, Colin Fitzpatrick, Jack Gosden-Kaye, Hunter Hodges, Martin Mackovic, James Riley, Elliot Rogers, Christoph Seifriedsberger, and Joachim Sutton.

A political economy major from Cupertino, California, Walliis making his debut on the Pac-12 All-Academic team while this is the third career honor for Wegrzycki-Szymczyk, who earned Second Team All-Academic honors in both 2016 and 2017. Graduating with a degree in sociology, Wegrzycki-Szymczyk was named the 2018 Pac-12 Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year while also collecting Pac-12 Men's Rowing Athlete of the Year honors for the third consecutive season. Wallis and Wegrzycki-Szymczyk both competed in the Bears' varsity eight this season, helping Cal to a third-place finish at the 2018 IRA National Championship Regatta.

Fellow seniors Arat, Hall, Fitzpatrick, Mackovic, and Riley also capped their Cal careers with All-Academic honors.

"This senior class set the standard for our team," said outgoing head coach Mike Teti. "Not just when it comes to competing, but what they've done in the classroom. I think they are the true definition of student-athletes in every sense of the word."

To be eligible for selection to the Pac-12 All-Academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and appear in at least 50 percent of team competitions.
