Martinez Sets School Record In The Pole Vault
Lauren Martinez Finishes 11th And Earns Second Team All-America Honors
EUGENE, Oregon – Junior
Lauren Martinez set a California school record as she took 11
th in the pole vault on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championship on Thursday at Historic Hayward Field.
Martinez missed her first attempt at 13-1.50, but recovered on her next attempt to clear the bar easily and advance to the next height. At 13-7.25, Martinez jumped the bar on her first attempt. The bar moved up another six inches to 14-1.25 a height that Martinez hasn't cleared in her Cal career.
However, the Albuquerque, New Mexico native was able to clear that height. Martinez missed her first two attempts to set up a decisive final attempt which she leaped over without touching the bar at all. Once on the ground she gave a fist pump of relief and celebration as she was one of only 11 student-athletes to clear that mark.
At the next height of 14-5.25, Martinez ran through on the first two attempts. However, she put forth a fantastic effort on her final attempt, hitting the bar with her leg before it fell. Martinez finished in 11
th, but cleared the same height as the person who finished in fourth.
Martinez earned Second-Team All-America honors, joining
Peter Simon,
Ashtyn Davis and
Silviu Bocancea who all earned the honor yesterday.
McKay Johnson was named Honorable Mention All-America well.
The NCAA Championship will switch back to the men's side tomorrow as
