SAN FRANCISCO – Three Golden Bears won in singles on the first day of the Battle in the Bay Classic to advance to Saturday's round of 16, as the three-day tournament began on the hard courts at the California Tennis Club.
 
After first-round byes, Cal junior Bjorn Hoffmann defeated San Francisco's Romeo Mitgaard Jivraj, 6-3, 6-3, sophomore Jack Molloy topped Colin Markers of Texas, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(11), and freshman Yuta Kikuchi beat Cal Poly's Dominic Bechard, 7-5, 6-4, in the singles round of 32. Ben Draper played in the round of 32, but the sophomore Bear fell to Pacific's Philip Horvath, 7-5, 6-4.
 
In doubles, Draper and Molloy lost to USC's Bradley Frye and Jake Sands, 8-5, while the pair of Kikuchi and Hoffmann dropped an 8-6 result to UC Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillen and Victor Krustev.
 
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Cal junior Dominic Barretto won his consolation singles opener on Friday as the Bears competed on day two of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Barretto bested Marquette's Luis Heredia-Gomez, 7-6(3), 6-4, in the round of 32 on the clay courts of the Town Club.
 
Also in the consolation round of 32, sophomore Can Kaya fell to Matis Bot of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(9). In the singles main draw, sophomore Paul Barretto lost to Tennessee's Pat Harper, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, in Friday's round of 32.
 
With only three Bears playing in Milwaukee, Dominic Barretto teamed with Marquette's Brett Myers to play in the doubles main draw. On Thursday, the duo upset Minnesota's fifth-seeded Josep Krstanovic and Marino Alpeza, 7-6. But the two lost to BYU's Ben Gajardo and Sam Tullis, 8-2, in Friday's round of 16.
 
Kaya and Paul Barretto were scheduled to take on USC's top-seeded Jake DeVine and Logan Smith on Friday. But the match was postponed due to darkness and is now scheduled to start on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT.
