NEW ORLEANS, La. – California graduate student Garrett Corcoran was named USTFCCCA National Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Corcoran earned the first cross country win in his collegiate career on Saturday at the USF Invitational. He completed four laps around the 2K course at Golden Gate Park in a time of 24:31.20. From the jump, Corcoran was ready to race as he leaped out to the front of the pack and led the race for its entirety, crossing each split in first place. He is the fifth man to win the USF Invitational individual title for Cal.

Corcoran won the race by 5.8 seconds and had an average mile time of 4:56.0. He is the first Bear to win the National Athlete of the week in cross country.

His individual victory also helped the men's team to a team victory. It was the sixth time that the men's squad has won the USF Invitational as they finished in front of Stanford, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Jose State, St. Mary's, Academy of Art and Dominican.

Corcoran and the rest of the Bears will return to action on September 28 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
