Cal-Arizona Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

Overall thoughts:
"For whatever reason, we didn't have a sense of urgency on defense tonight. The things that we've worked on the most this week – shooting and free throws – we struggled with tonight. We went to the locker room down 12, and if Darius McNeill hits a couple of his shots and we make our free throws, they don't have that momentum. We have to improve our sense of urgency on the defensive end. It's a major, major problem for us right now. We're an athletic team. We're a quick team. We're undersized, so we shouldn't be getting taken off the bounce the way we're getting taken off the bounce or opening up the floor for guys to kick out to wide-open shooters."

On team's attitude thus far:
"At this very moment, everyone's unhappy. We need to regroup on Monday. We still have a lot of games to play. Some guys are going to have to grow up quicker. We're young, but Justice is our veteran. He's a sophomore. He's the guy I put all the pressure on – him and Paris – to get us going, and he's in his second year of college. We're young, but we still have to play the games, be able to compete, be able to execute and do the things that we need to do to win. We're just going to continue to challenge our guys. They always come in with the right attitude. As long as that's the case, I'm hopeful that we can make a run, but defensively we have to get better.

On how to improve defense:
"Effort is the biggest thing. We keep going back to the fact that we're young but we're a lot more than what we're showing, and we all know that. It's disappointing to see us work so hard, especially with shooting and defense being the emphasis in practice…It's little moments like those that make the biggest difference. We all know it and we're not capitalizing on it."

On his personal offensive production:
"Coach challenged me. I haven't been performing like I should be and I came into this game and I was supposed to make plays for myself and my teammates. Regardless of how I performed, it wasn't good enough. It doesn't matter because we lost the game."
