The Bears are coming off of a strong fall, which featured plenty of success in doubles. Sophomores
Jacob Brumm and freshman
Yuta Kikuchi In particular shone in their new partnership. They capped a sensational first half of the season when they reached the doubles semifinals of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in November. Kikuchi also competed in singles at fall nationals, falling in the round of 64. In its first tournament together as a doubles team, the duo upset the No. 1 (Mississippi State's Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic) and No. 16 (Virginia Tech's Carlo Donato/Mitch Harper) doubles pairs en route to the quarterfinals at the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships in October.
Â
Cal sophomores
Paul Barretto and
Can Kaya also stood out in doubles, as they reached the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in October and won the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in September.
Â
Florida State is 5-0 and hasn't lost a singles match yet during the dual-match season. The Seminoles have only lost one doubles match so far, which came in their most recent win, 4-0 over FAU on Jan. 18, as host FSU clinched the title of the Florida State Spring Invitational. Florida State junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhular is ranked 84th in singles.
Â
Poll Position
No surprises in the current Oracle ITA doubles poll, which includes two Cal pairs in No. 14
Yuta Kikuchi and
Jacob Brumm and No. 18
Paul Barretto and
Can Kaya. In singles,
Paul Barretto is ranked 98th. Cal isn't ranked in the first Oracle ITA top 25 team poll of the season, but the Bears are listed second among teams receiving votes. The next team poll comes out on Jan. 24, while new singles and doubles rankings comes out on Feb. 6
Â
Next Time
Cal faces 17th-ranked Virginia on the first day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at No. 9 Texas A&M on Jan. 26 in College Station, Texas. The winner of the four-team event – that includes the host Aggies and Western Michigan – will be decided on Jan. 27, and that team will advance to the Oracle ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago in February.
