LOS ANGELES – Fifteen different student-athletes scored a total of 17 tries and the defense delivered two shutouts as California got off to a solid start in 15-a-side play against UC Santa Cruz and Claremont Colleges Saturday at the Storer Classic. The Golden Bears face UCLA Sunday at 1:30 p.m. PT in Wallis Annenberg Stadium to conclude the opening event in Cal's spring season.
 
The Bears kicked off their 2019 campaign with a 43-0 win over UCSC in the abbreviated, 40-minute match format of the Storer. Scrumhalf Jack Gallagher was 4-of-5 on conversions and added one of Cal's seven tries against Santa Cruz.
 
Against Claremont Colleges, Cal took 10 trips to the try zone, with two apiece from Jason Severance, Adam Roeske and Ken Kurihara, while keeping the Lions at bay in a 68-0 win. Freshman Sam Walsh connected on 9-of-10 conversions.
 
"It was an honor to be out there for the first time in the Cal colors," said Max Murphy, a freshman among the forwards making their debut in 15s.
 
"Overall it was a good start," added Kurihara.
 
Sunday's match against the Bruins will conclude the event named in honor of the former UCLA and U.S. National Team head coach. Cal then returns to campus for the start of academic classes and its home opener Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. vs. UC Davis on Witter Rugby Field.
