Cal-Utah Postgame Notes

Game Served As Ninth Annual Pete Newell Classic

  • Today's game served as the ninth annual Pete Newell Classic, which honors Cal's legendary coach who guided the Bears to the 1959 NCAA championship.
  • The game featured two special presentations at halftime. First, John Ricksen was presented the Pete Newell Career Achievement Award. A Cal Hall of Famer who starred in tennis and basketball as an undergraduate in the early 1950s, he went on to have a long legal career and an officer in the Big C Society. Then, Cal recognized members of the 1959 NCAA title team on the 60th anniversary of the championship who returned to Berkeley for a reunion.
  • Justice Sueing scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half. The total was his most since scoring a career-high 27 points vs. Arizona on Jan. 12. It also marked his fourth 20-point outing of the season. Sueing also tied his season best with three steals.
  • Matt Bradley shot 3-for-5 from 3-point range to lift his numbers to 29-for-61 (47.5%) behind the arc this season. He also tied his career highs with five rebounds and five assists.
  • Darius McNeill poured in 15 points, his first game in double figures since scoring 16 vs. Arizona State on Jan. 9.
  • Cal sank nine 3-pointers, its most since making 10 at USC in the Pac-12 opener Jan. 3.
  • One game after committing a season-low 4 turnovers vs. Colorado, Cal had only 7 turnovers against Utah – the Bears' lowest two-game stretch of the year.
  • Utah's 13 3-pointers matched a season high by a Cal opponent this year. Saint Mary's also made 13 on Dec. 1.
