Cal-Utah Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

Overall thoughts:
"Before the game I challenged the guys, we've been talking about putting 40 minutes together and I said "You know what fellas, let's put 20 minutes together first." And then we came regroup and talk about it and regroup for the second half. I felt like we were able to do that. They it some unbelievable shots in the first half, we were able to match it. We knocked down seven threes in the first half and then in the second half I feel like we settled. I felt like we took too many pull-ups, had too many mismatches, and that really hurt us on the offensive end. When you go through a scoring drought, the energy and execution makes our defense seem to take a toll. When you can't score its tough. I'm going to watch the film and I'm pretty sure they won 80% of the 50-50 balls and it could've went either way. That just comes down to toughness and fight and we have to get better."

On Utah's 3-Point Shooting:
"Started off in the zone, made us take some long slides to get there and started to knock a few out of the zone.  Once we matched up, I didn't like the communication, I didn't like our coming together and we were giving them space."

On effort:
"I saw fight and effort in the first half and I saw it in the second half, but just not enough scoring. It was on use because we're settling for contested pull-tips. We could've gotten to the rim more and that's going to be something we are going to look for. We were the faster team and if we had been more aggressive, we would've gotten to the line a lot more. We should've gotten to the line 20 times, we should've been able to attack the rim and their closeouts much better than what we did."

On falling just short of the win:
"Going into this game, the key thing was to defend the 3-point line, knowing how Utah plays. In the first half, we really put ourselves into a deep hole, and they just had their momentum going throughout the game. We started hitting shots, and we kind of separated throughout the second half. Us not being able to defend the three-point line really hurt us."

"We are young team, a lot of it is a lack of communication, very little details that cause the big problems, especially with them hitting that many threes in the first half throughout the game. We have to keep our head up, and continue to learn how to play with the game."

On Effort:
"Coach's big thing is effort. He shouldn't have to coach effort. And, I think our guys have done a really good job as far as us going out there and competing and putting ourselves in a position to win. But, tonight those little details and moments where we aren't talking on defense really hurts us in the end. You can see how when we go on droughts, and they don't, it really separates ourselves. We have to really work on that. Young team, but we are too deep in the season to keep having this lack of focus."

Attitude after hitting two big threes before halftime:
"Going into the game, we thought we had a really good chance. And, especially after going into halftime, I think we were down by 4 points, but we thought we could come into the second half and execute our stuff offensively and defensively. We struggled to make a couple shots, and Utah started making theirs. That's why their rebound count was so high, because we were missing ours and they're making theirs. We have to keep pushing forward. This one is behind us, and we have a big game against Stanford coming up, and we have to get back to film and break some stuff down."

On rebounding:
"We struggled pretty well rebounding both offensively and defensively. They had some really big guys down low, and they crash the rack pretty hard. I feel like we fought really hard, they came out with a lot of 50/50 balls and a lot of tipped rebounds and stuff, which they had the advantage on that. I feel like we put the effort toward rebounding, they just came out on top by a big margin."
