Bears Falter On Bars But Overcome Slow Bars Start To Finish Strong
TUCSON, Ariz. -- California had two options, let go of its slow start on the uneven bars or struggle with it for the rest of the night.
The Golden Bears displayed its grit to finish strong in a loss to Arizona. The No. 12 Golden Bears fell to the No. 23 Wildcats, 195.975-194.450, but set a season-high 49.300 vault total and picked up three event titles.
"Tonight was really just about the resilience of our team," head coach
Justin Howell said. "It's not easy to start off the way we did, struggling on bars, which was very uncharacteristic. I was really impressed with our determination and grit. We came back and were really strong on beam."
Freshman
Milan Clausi continued a standout week by sharing the vault title with teammate
Kyana George using a career-high 9.90.
Cassidy Keelen built on her performance against Stanford on Monday with a career-best 9.90 on beam to win the event.
This marks Clausi's third event title this season, her second on vault. It's also George's second-straight vault title.Â
The dual meet didn't start the Bears' way after opening the contest with a 47.075 on bars, but Cal got back in the mix with its' 49.300 on vault thanks to the efforts of Clausi and George, along with a 9.875 from
Toni-Ann Williams and a 9.850 from
Sylvie Seilnacht.Â
Howell said he and the rest of his coaching staff didn't feel the need to step in after the slow start.
"They came together on their own," he said. "We always tell them that performances like that don't define you, it's just a moment. You have the choice to make for how your perform for the rest of competition. They did a great job of putting that moment away and staying in the present. We talk about that all the time, whether it's a career night or a rough start, it's the same concept."
Clausi and George carried the weight again for the Bears next on floor, as each tied for a team-best score of 9.825. The score was a season-best for George, as well.Â
Finally, on beam, the Bears posted their second-highest team score of the night (49.125). In addition to Keelen's event-winning score of 9.90, Williams finished right behind her with a mark of 9.875 and
Sofie Seilnacht tallied a 9.80.Â
Next up, the Bears host Arizona State and BYU on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 5 pm from Haas Pavilion.Â
